Voting is over for 2012 – Winners announced on November 18 at 4:00pm EST/10:00pm Nigerian time

There’s just one step left for the 2012 Nigerian Blog Awards, and that is to announce the winners! This will be done via twitter on November 18, 2012 at 4:00pm EST (10:00pm Nigerian time). We’re trying to accomodate the Nigeria-based people better than we did last year, when the winners were announced at 1:00am Nigerian time!

In case you aren’t aware, all the fun will be happening from our twitter account: @naijablogawards. Do follow us if you aren’t already, and we’ll be sure to return the favour!

The winners will be posted on the blog by November 19 at the latest. Who is else is looking forward to learning who the winners are!?

S-i-x more voting days

That’s right folks, voting ends on November 11, 2012 at 11:59pm EST (5:59am on November 12, Nigerian time).

Just as a reminder, if you entered your email address during the nomination phase, when you go to vote your vote is counted immediately because your account has been validated. Only newcomers to the site will need to check their email inbox for a confirmation email.

If you need a reminder of what comes next, please visit the 2012 schedule.

Have a great week!

Early voters: please vote again!

On Tuesday, we discovered that votes submitted by people whose email address was already in our system were not being captured properly. This was resolved on Wednesday. As a result, if you voted on Monday (October 22), Tuesday (October 23), or Wednesday October 24 (before 2pm EST), we ask you to please submit your vote again by visiting our VOTING PAGE. If your vote was counted the first time, you will get a message saying “You have already voted. Thank you for your participation in the 2012 Nigerian Blog Awards!” If you were affected by the glitch, then you will get this message “Your vote has been sent. Thank you for your participation in the 2012 Nigerian Blog Awards!” and your vote will now be counted.

Note: if this was your first visit to our voting site, your vote was received without issue.

Please tell all your fans who voted on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to resubmit their votes, just to double check. If we receive enough comments asking that we extend the voting period by 3 days to accommodate this, we will be happy to do that.

We apologize for this inconvenience and we sincerely thank our observant voter (you know who you are!).

Voting begins today

If you’re ready to vote for your favourite nominees please head over to the >>VOTE<< page and do your duty!

Remember: you can only vote once with your email address so please make sure you’re happy with your selections before you submit the form. (If, despite this, you do make an error, send an email to nigerianblogawards@gmail.com and we’ll try to help).

Happy voting!!

Welcome your 2012 Nigerian Blog Award nominees!

Thank you all for your patience in waiting for us to announce the 2012 Nigerian Blog Award nominees! Please note that starting on MONDAY OCTOBER 22 until SUNDAY NOVEMBER 11, you will be able to vote for your favourite blog in each of the categories. You can only vote once with your email address so please make sure you make all your selections before submitting your entry. If you did not participate in the nomination phase of the Awards you will be asked to register prior to voting.

The nominees for the 2012 Nigerian Blog Awards are:

  1. Best Beauty Blog
Blog about makeup or other beauty products.

  2. Best Book, Poetry, or Writing Blog
Blog that focuses on books, poetry, or writing, in particular the blogger’s original works.

  3. Best Business, Career, or Job Blog
Blog that focuses on any aspect of business or career, or on finding jobs.

  4. Best Cause Blog

Blog about raising awareness for a particular cause, such as a medical condition or a political movement.
This category was removed because the nominated blogs were either too young a blog or did not even vaguely fit the description of the category. One blog partially worked because although it is not devoted to a cause, it raised awareness about someone’s illness. Most submitting nominations mistook a cause for a theme or subject.
  5. Best Collaborative or Group Blog
Blog on any topic, written by two or more people.

  6. Best-Designed Blog
Blog that is visually appealing. Although the design can be based on a template, it must be modified from the original template.

  7. Best Entertainment Blog
Blog about the entertainment industry, including celebrities and gossip.

  8. Best Faith-based Blog
Blog with a focus on religious beliefs or themes.

  9. Best Fashion or Style Blog
Blog about fashion, fashion design, or personal style.

  10. Best Fitness or Health Blog
Blog that focuses on healthy living, exercise, or wellness.

Blog with a focus on food, cooking, catering, or similar.

Blog that is amusing or lighthearted in nature.

  13. Best Music Blog
Blog that focuses on music or the music industry.

  14. Best New Blog
Blog established in August 2011 or more recently.

This category only has four eligible nominated blogs.

  24. Best Topical Blog
Blog with a clear niche that is not represented in any of the other categories.

  25. Best Tutorial Blog
Blog that focuses on teaching its readers through the use of step-by-step instructions.

  26. Best Travel or Tourism Blog
Blog about travelling within Nigeria, Africa, or elsewhere in the world.

Nominees announced October 19

Great news: we have sorted out our glitches and will be revealing the nominees tomorrow, Friday, October 19! A big thanks goes to our judges who were charged with narrowing down the list of nominees.

And of course we thank you for your patience!

Announcing of the nominated blogs DELAYED

We hate to do this but the revelation of the nominees will have to be delayed due to unanticipated circumstances related to the new nominee selection process that was put into place. Voting is still expected to commence on October 22, 2012, as indicated in the schedule.

Thank you for your understanding.

Update – one week before the nominees are revealed!

Things have been quiet on this front but I assure a lot has been going on behind the scenes:

  • All (and there were a ton!) the nominated blogs were reviewed for eligibility.
  • The top blogs in each category were forwarded to judges who were asked to select their top 5 (and top 10 in the case of Nigerian Blog of the Year) blogs.
  • The nominated blogs will be presented to you next Monday, October 15.
  • Voting on these blogs will commence on October 22.

(More information about the 2012 Awards is available in the Schedule.)

Thank you to all who have “Liked” our Facebook page so far! Please continue to do so, and ask your friends to as well.

Nominations are closed – now what?

Thank you for participating so actively in the nomination process! The nomination form was filled out over 8500 times (though as mentioned before, not all of those who submitted nominations have verified the nomination by clicking on the link in the email that was sent to them).

At this point, let’s answer some burning questions you may have:

Why didn’t I receive a verification email from nigerianblogawards?

There are several possible reasons for this:

  1. Our system had a glitch and didn’t send you a verification email, even though your submission was received. We’re happy to say that in all the cases where someone did not receive an email after submitting nominations, we were always able to retrieve the person’s submission. If this is your situation, please send an email to us with the email address that you submitted your nomination with and we will be happy to sort you out.
  2. You did get an email from us but it landed in your spam or junk mail folder! Oops! Please have a look in your spam folder before emailing us. (This was the issue in the majority of cases.)
  3. You entered your email address incorrectly and the verification email was sent to the wrong address—darn! It’s very easy to type your email address incorrectly (after all how often do we email ourselves?). Unfortunately in this case we don’t have the human resources to dedicate to figuring out how your email address could have been mistyped to help retrieve your submission. The good news is we have figured out how we can reduce instances of this occurrence in 2013.

nigerianblogawards sent me an email asking me to resubmit my nominations but when I click on the link it doesn’t work! What happened?

Because the nomination phase ended we had to bring the nomination form down. But don’t worry: simply send an email to nigerianblogawards@gmail.com and we will sort you out.

I made an error with the nominations I submitted—how can I fix it?

For the next three days (until Wednesday September 26) we will make edits to your submission. Once again, the address to send emails to concerning this is nigerianblogawards@gmail.com.

My fans submitted my blog name rather than the blog address—will those nominations count?

If we can easily make the link between your blog address and blog name, sure. If not they won’t count.

So, what’s next? How long do we have to wait to find out who the nominees are?

The short answer is October 15. Please have a look at the schedule for more details.

Please leave any other questions you have in the comments. If you want your blog to be listed on our site, please leave the details of your blog below.

Final week of nominations

Thank for filling out the NOMINATION FORM and inviting your fans to do the same! This is the last week for nominations: the nomination process officially closes at 11:59pm EST on September 23, 2012 (4:59am Nigerian time on September 24). In the week that follows we’ll be visiting all the nominated blogs to check that they meet the criteria for being awarded a Nigerian Blog Award.

In order to qualify the blog must:

  • be written by a Nigerian OR be written by a non-Nigerian AND have a primary focus on Nigeria
  • have been in existence for at least six months (i.e. since February 2012) AND have at least 15 entries. The only exception to this is nominees in the Best New Blog category.
  • have been updated in the last three months (i.e. in May 2012 or more recently)

Additionally, blogs that are eligible for nomination should:

  • consist of (preferably reverse-) chronological posts
  • contain words and not only images or files
  • allow interaction with readers through at least one of the following: comments, a rating system, or a voting system
  • be updated by no more than six individuals

Please check the full schedule for additional details of the 2012 process and don’t forget to get those nominations in as soon as possible!
