Winners of the Tecno SMARTest Blog/SMARTest Tech Blog contest

As we mentioned in January, Tecno Mobile Nigeria sponsored the SMARTest Blog/SMARTest Tech Blog Contest, an event created to share Tecno’s Smart Family, a group of six devices that offers the options for every lifestyle, with everyone. These impressive phones range from the M5, with its 8MP camera and a 4.5″ touchscreen to the Phantom Pad Mini, a phone/tablet (phablet) combo that features a 7″ touchscreen. Visit http://bit.ly/TECNOLiveSmart to read up on the specs of the Smart Family products.

Ten bloggers representing 5 technology blogs and 5 other blogs participated, and a winner was announced for the two categories.

The five technology blogs that participated were:
Don Caprio (now Geek.ng), who reviewed the Phantom A+
Innovation Village, who reviewed the Phantom Pad Mini
Mobility, who reviewed the Phantom AIII
Otekbits (now Bits.ng), who reviewed the Phantom AIII (review not available online)
Techcity, who reviewed the M7

The five non-technology blogs that participated were:
Date360, who reviewed the P5
Gistmania /Naijapals, who reviewed the M5
Naijabambam, who reviewed the P5
NaijaVibe, who reviewed the M5
Sisi Yemmie, who reviewed the M7

The winners

Here are the words that representatives of Tecno used to describe the winning technology blog:

  • wonderful use of imagery

Congratulations to the winners!

TECNO sponsors the SMARTest Blog/SMARTest Tech Blog contest

If you live in Nigeria, you’ve heard of TECNO Mobile Nigeria—TECNO, after all, was the first dual SIM mobile phone brand in Africa. TECNO Mobile’s latest offering is the TECNO Smart Family, a group of six devices that offers the options for every lifestyle, allowing you to #LiveSmart, which just happens to be slogan for these products!

Since we’re the Nigerian Blog Awards, we think it’s important to have a phone that allows you to easily use it to blog. All the Smart Family devices seem to fit the bill, but we especially like the Phantom AIII—with its excellent camera (13.0MP rear camera and 8.0 front-facing camera (incredible!!)), and large screen size, you’ll be able to easily create blog posts once you download the WordPress for Android or Blogger for Android app from Google Play. This phone was launched just one month ago in Lagos; learn more about it here.

SMARTest Blog/SMARTest Tech Blog contest – Sponsored by TECNO

We’ve been working with TECNO Mobile to create a special opportunity for a small group of Nigerian bloggers. The SMARTest Blog and SMARTest Tech Blog contest is simple: ten representatives from Nigerian blogs have been invited to visit TECNO’s offices in Lagos, listen to a short presentation, and then each blogger will be given one of the Smart Family products to review and keep. Bloggers will not be asked to include any specific information in their reviews, so you’ll know that what you’re reading is truly each writer’s opinion. TECNO will then evaluate the reviews and select one winner for the two categories: the best review by a tech blogger and the best review by a non-tech blogger. Both of these winners will:

  • receive a flagship product from each of TECNO’s campaigns for the next year
  • have their winning review shared on TECNO’s social media channels, giving them access to over 250,000 fans)

In addition, there may be opportunities for future brand campaigns with TECNO, and TECNO may decide to purchase ad slots on the winners’ site.

So tell us: Have you used any of TECNO’s Smart Family of products? What do you think?

Winner of the 2013 WhoGoHost contest

Happy New Year! We wish you all the best in your blogging pursuits in 2014.

Just before Christmas we held a contest to award one winner one year of the Premier hosting plan for their website with 2013 Nigerian Blog Awards sponsor WhoGoHost (hosting does not include the cost of the domain name).

In this case it paid to be the first to comment because our random number generated selected number THREE and since the winner, Franca Olisakwe, did all three things required to get three entries in the contest, she is the winner! Congratulations to her! We have emailed her with the details of how to claim her prize.

Thanks to WhoGoHost for their collaboration in providing this prize and stay tuned because we hope to bring you many more opportunities to win prizes that will help you on your blogging journey.

2013 Nigerian Blog Awards winners!

Did you tune in to our Twitter Awards show yesterday? If not, don’t despair, the winners are listed below for your convenience.

Before we launch into the winners, in response to questions we received during the Awards show:

  • Every year I see the value of rallying your fan base. The voting period was four weeks long this year and those who were sending tweets to their fans right until the end seemed to do well with regard to winning in the Popular Vote category.
  • Judges include current or past bloggers, those who enjoy reading blogs, and writers. Their work is to compare the blogs nominated in a category, and based on the short description provided for each category, select the blog in the list that best reflects the description. In addition to using their respective background, they are free to select the blog that speaks most to them within the criteria provided.
  • As we did in 2012, we announce both the Popular Vote winner (the nominee that received the most votes) and the Judges’ Choice winner (determined by a small group of judges who looked at all the blogs in a category before selecting a winner). We started this last year because we think there’s value in both:
    1. having a small group of people who will actually read some of the content in all the nominated blogs in a category before making a decision based on the content seen across the blogs
    2. a blogger rallying their fans and friends to vote for them

However, this means we announced 58 winners this year, which is entirely too many, especially since we want to hold a live event in 2014. So, next year we will announce one winner per category, but we will arrive at a winner by taking into account both of the above ideas: we want to encourage bloggers to rally fans, but we also need a quality assurance element.

  • Bella Naija decided several years ago that it would not contend in the Nigerian Blog Awards.

Blogger tools: Google Analytics

In order to be the best blogger you can be, you need to have good tools. One tool we recommend is Google Analytics (it’s free too!). Google Analytics is the current industry standard for keeping track of website statistics, but that’s such a simplistic definition!

GA screenshot

One way to make money from your blog is by selling ads on your website or partnering with brands that will welcome the opportunity to get publicity for their brand on your blog. In both cases the size of your traffic is an important factor: you’ll need to be able to tell your prospective client how many views your website receives, so they can decide if your blog will bring as many eyes to their advert, website, or product as they would like.

Even if you have no desire to monetize your blog, Google Analytics allows you to find out information about the search terms that people are using to find your blog; this can give you ideas for future blog posts. You can also find out which social media sources are working best for your blog and concentrate on those, or you can work to increase your presence on other social media outlets. Finally, you can use the stats provided to set goals to increase your blog’s traffic from one month to the next.

You may have installed a traffic counter on your blog, or maybe your blog software has built-in stats. However the truth is only Google Analytics is considered the industry standard so the sooner you switch, the better.
